Broome St. residents (and other interested parties):
In case anyone still has questions about exactly what the residential college will look like here at Broome St. next fall, I'm setting up this thread for commentary and Q&A. Please feel free to submit questions or comments about the res college option. We still have a few days before the Feb 14 deadline for those who haven't yet submitted applications and may have questions or concerns about the proposed changes in this building. I'll try to monitor the site pretty closely over the next couple days to answer comments you may post.

do students in broome street already have any preference for being chosen in the residential college?
There's no official preference; however, you do have the advantage of already living here and knowing to some degree what the experience would have to offer--especially in terms of location. We're just hoping to open up even more opportunities for residents to engage meaningfully with the surrounding neighborhoods (among lots of other things). So if you do fill out the app with Broome as your preference, draw on your experiences here as a resident as you explain why you'd want to continue on here. Thanks for asking!
Here are some answers to questions submitted to me via email this afternoon:
- What is the zero-credit course or zero-credit grade?
This is a way to account on your transcript for your participation in the Res College community. It verifies that you've had a significant amount of experience in community building and leadership. As I understand it, the credit for the course comes through participation in the community -- attending events, suggesting activities, performing the required community service, etc.
- If we are accepted, do we get a room assigned to us?
Roommates can apply together, but they all must be applying to the res college. (In other words, one roommate can't opt out of the program but still ask to live with others who are participating.) The first year the rooms will be assigned. In subsequent years, returning students will have some mechanism to request specific rooms or floors.
-How many activities per week or month constitutes being actively involved? I have a vague idea but I, as well as some of my roomates,
are concerned about having enough time for class work as well as having internships.
I don't believe we have -- or want to have -- an actual quota. We're thinking more in terms like: do you know your RA? Do you know the faculty in residence? Do you know the person who organizes the programming for your primary stream? Have they seen you over the course of the semester, and have you participated in conversations about the direction you'd like the community to take? We understand that everyone's schedule is different and that some periods of the semester will be worse than others. The only requirement with a set number of hours is the service requirement; we will be extremely flexible in terms of the types of activities that count for service. We'll also have someone on staff, we hope, whose job it is to facilitate service opporunities with neighborhood agencies.
- Is there any opportunity for us to pitch ideas for group outings?
(i.e. sporting events, performances, etc.)
Absolutely. We want this to be a community in which all participants are floating ideas and activities. There will be more opportunities here than elsewhere, I think, for this kind of input. We anticipate that the first group of students to live at the res college will really help shape the directions and traditions for years to follow.
I was just wondering: is it possible to apply for broome in the fall and go abroad in the spring (2008)? THanks!
Yes! You can apply to the res college even if you intend to go abroad either semester next year.
