The Downtown Book Club organized for 2007-2008 in a meeting Wednesday night. After discussing several nominations from group members, we voted to read Audre Lorde's "biomythography," ZAMI: A New Spelling of My Name, which covers a good slice of NYC history -- roughly from the 1920s through the 1970s. The book chronicles Lorde's experiences growing up as the child of West Indian immigrants, as a precocious young poet, and as a black lesbian in the midst of Cold War homophobia and political paranoia. Lorde died of cancer in 1992. You can find more about her life and work here.
The ZAMI discussion will take place on Wednesday, October 24, at 8pm. If you weren't able to attend the organizing meeting but would like to join the discussion, email bryan.waterman@nyu.edu ASAP in order to secure a copy of the book.
Coming up next: The group also decided to read Michael Chabon's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay over the winter break for a discussion in early February. That book order will go out in late November -- stay tuned.
