Did you know…NYU consumes enough electricity in a year to power 15,000 US homes; Absorbing all of the greenhouse gases emitted from NYU's energy usage would require planting 18 million trees; The annual carbon emissions from electricity used in NYU residence halls is equivalent to burning a million gallons of gasoline; About a third of NYU's electricity comes from nuclear power, which generates waste deadly to humans for 500 million years.
Worried about these numbers? This is your chance to see your energy impact and the differences your choices can make! NYUnplugged is a challenge to the residents of NYU to use less energy. For the month of April, you and the rest of your dorm will be competing with other residence halls to reduce electricity consumption by the greatest percent. In May, there will be a sustainably-catered party for members of the winning dorm.
Visit www.nyu.edu/sustainability/unplugged for more information on energy and for resources on the why and how of energy reduction. Stay tuned for up-to-date data on your dorm's electricity consumption. Take the time today to look at how much electricity you use and ask yourself how much you really need. This April, join your fellow students in unplugging!
