Join me for a brief info session Sunday evening at 6:30 in the Broome Room to organize this year's Downtown Book Club. All streams welcome. In past years, titles have included Borroughs's Junky, Mitchell's Up in the Old Hotel, Kurlansky's History on the Half Shell, O'Hara's Lunch Poems, Moore's WATCHMEN, Cunningham's Specimen Days, Sante's Low-Life, and McCann's Let the Great World Spin.
Titles are nominated by the group (my nomination for our first mtg will be the recent graphic novel adaptation of Allen Ginsberg's HOWL, adapted by Eric Drooker) and can be fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels, short stories, poetry – so long as they have some bearing on the neighborhoods around us, including outer boroughs.
If we do choose HOWL as our opening read, we'll follow it with an outing to see the film. Once we've determined our first title and a time to meet, I'll place the book order. The Faculty Fellows in Residence program underwrites the cost of books; you're only asked to pay for them if you take one but fail to show for our meeting. I'll order pizza.
