Join us for a conversation with Professor Carolyn Eastman, who will be visiting NYU from UT Austin. She will be giving a talk in the English department on Tuesday the 26th and will be holding a special event with the ResCollege at the Smith-Waterman family's apartment.

Over dinner we'll converse with Professor Eastman about a brief portion of her recent book A NATION OF SPEECHIFIERS: MAKING AN AMERICAN PUBLIC AFTER THE REVOLUTION, which discusses the challenges of creating a new national identity in the early United States and how that new experience of citizenry -- including non-elites -- related to participation, as raced, gendered, and classed subjects, in a public sphere of civil and political discourse. How do the challenges of the post-Revolutionary America relate to questions about access to the public sphere for Americans today?

This event is open to all interested ResCollege students but should especially appeal to students of American history, literature, and politics.
