What is Broome DETROIT?
Broome DETROIT is an Alternative Spring Break trip where a group of students,
faculty & staff from Broome Res College travel down to Detroit, MI to do
service-learning work related to the burgeoning urban farming initiative taking hold in the NEW Detroit. “Alternative” spring break implies that all participants are making a commitment to completely substance-free (no drugs, alcohol, etc.) spring break trip where the main focus is on
doing meaningful community-service work.
What will the group do in Detroit?
This is still in development as we continue to make connections with local organizations. We’ll also be interested in having students who join the team help us in creating our agenda of service-work for the week. In addition to doing service work, which could range from urban farming to rebuilding/de-constructing homes, we’ll also spend plenty of time exploring the culture and history of Detroit (think auto-industry, “Motown,” etc.)
How do we get there & where do we stay?
We’re exploring all options, with the goal of keeping costs to a minimum. We’ll most likely travel as a group by train (on one of the US’ most historic and beautiful train routes) and find modest, but safe, accommodations at a local hostel, church, or organization that can take us on. This is still in development, but we’ll be eager to solicit ideas and input from group members who may be aware of Detroit-based resources that we’re not.
What are the dates?
We likely will leave NYC on Saturday, March 10th and return back to New York City on Saturday,
March 17th. Participants must be able to commit to the experience.
How much does Broome DETROIT cost?
Each participant will be asked to submit a non-refundable deposit of(amount TBD, but not to exceed $500). The remaining amount needed to cover the overall trip costs will be fundraised by
the group before we leave on the trip. The costs will include travel, lodging, food, and
excursions!
What is the commitment?
In addition to going on the trip and doing service work while we’re in Detroit, each student accepted to go on the trip makes a commitment to attending regularly scheduled team meetings and pre-trip educational sessions as well as to help out fully with group fundraising efforts.

When are applications due?
Applications are due by 11:59pm on Sunday, Oct. 30th The apps will be
reviewed and a team will be selected and announced by Nov. 18th (to allow for
those who’ve been offered a spot on the team a chance to discuss the
opportunity with their families over Thanksgiving Break, if necessary). Those
not selected will be placed on a wait-list and made offers to join the team
if/when spaces open up on the team. Students who’ve been offered a spot on
Broome DETROIT 2012 will be asked to officially accept/decline by submitting a
portion (TBD) of the non-refundable deposit by Friday, Dec. 2nd; this
secures their spot on the team.
If you’re interested in the possibility, go ahead and fill out the
application. You’re under no obligation to accept the offer to join the team
if you’re given one – you can decline. However, once you submit the smaller
deposit on Dec. 2nd, you’re definitely committed.
