Help Fight Famine in Somalia with a Penny War

There is an URGENT Human Rights emergency in Somalia and you can do your part to help with the crisis. Broome will be conducting a Penny War which will start this Thursday October 6th.

Here are the Rules:

  • There will be an empty water jug (decorated by YOU!!) that will represent your floor
  • Every time you put a penny or a bill, your floor will gain a point for the amount of money you put in, i.e., 1 penny = 1point; 1 dollar = 100 points
  • Nickels, dimes, or quarters will be considered negative points. So every time you put in a nickel, it subtracts 5 points from the floors score
  • For the floor with the most points by the December 18th culmination event, every resident of that floor will receive credit for attending an "other" program

Foodie, World Affair, and BCG residents will be asked to man the Penny War jugs that will be located on the Public Safety counter until the Dec 18th culmination event.

To receive credit as a community service event, residents can tend the jugs for 1 hour encouraging people to participate in the penny way and explain the crisis. (a sign-in/out sheet will be with the jugs)

http://www.wfp.org/crisis/horn-of-africa:
With FAMINE in southern Somalia and more than 9.6 million people in desperate need of food assistance in the region, countless lives hang in the balance.
Just 50 US cents per day is enough to feed a hungry child or mother on the edge of survival- on what things does a Broome resident spend 50 cents in a day? $1? $5?

The WFP urgently needs more resources to expand its emergency relief operation. Foodies will join with World Affairers and BCGers to twist residents' arms from the bottom of our hearts as they walk into the building to acknowledge the existence of the crisis and that help is within our reach. Broome has the incredible power of saving many lives.
