Every day we are bombarded with depressing news about the American economy and the grim state of our most vulnerable cities. At the heart of it all, citizens and residents continue to suffer wave after wave of deindustrialization, unemployment, and social injustice. As the evidence mounts all around us, it is clear that these conditions have only worsened following the recent global financial meltdown and housing crisis.
Detroit, arguably one of the hardest hit cities, has been described as “a slow motion Katrina” where its decline – decades in the making – has been nothing short of catastrophic. And yet Detroit is also emerging as surprisingly fertile territory for rebuilding the American Dream. Come join the dialogue about why Detroit is a city to watch in terms of revitalization, jobs, innovation, and green technology.
NB: Broome’s Alternative Spring Break 2012 is a game changer: only those with a die-hard sense of adventure, imagination, and social justice need apply.
